Drove the car for about 2 miles, coughed and spluttered for 1st mile but ran fine after that, parked up for about 5 mins after that would not start at all, it is turning over and petrol is getting through but its just not fireing up, it has brand new plugs and cap and half tank of petrol. wont bump start but battery is fully charged.

make sure that the distilled water in the battery is full, or the dizzy cap. failing that its a fiat cut your losses and get a ford.

Check the spark on all the leads

l do not know the car but would advise that if fuel is getting through (how do u know this?) u need to confirm ur have a spark. Unscrew one plug, plug it back into the cable, hold the plug cap (using insulated pliers) so the plug threads r touching the cylinder head (a good spot is probably where the plug screws in) then get someone to turn the engine over. You should get a spark, if u do not that is the problem. Oh & check ur cam belt!! (hope not) Assuming u do not have a spark then u need to determine why, as l said l do not know the car but likely culprits r the coil, points (if the car has) & HT cables (from coil & to plugs).

find h.t. lead from coil to distributor, pull lead out of the distributor end & hold the end just of a clean part of the engine with an insulated pliers, have somebody to spin the engine with the key, u should have a strong blue spark, if u have ur problem is in the cap (the cap itself or rotor arm), if no spark u have a bigger problem, pos ecu- crank sensor e.t.c there is another thing to look at which l have come across, on the front of the chassis on the passenger side there is an earth block , clean all spade terminals at this point & the block itself to the chassis.

come on its a fiat which stands for fix it again tommorow!! you get my point??!!

Check for spark on your HT leads as stated earlier.
