Sounds like a radiator problem
Get to the garage.

l own a repair shop, and you either have a thermostat bad in it or a cooling fan not working at all on it,id check the relay switch for the fans first there usually what causes this to happen, then make sure you have power to the relays and check all fuses also, you cant drive it long and it doing that, it will eventually warp a head on it and maybe ruin a good engine good luck l hope this helps.

The problem can be two fold.
The temperature rises when the car ticks over & the electric fan should cut in.
The water system could have;
1/.An air lock...caused by a leak allowing the water to evaporate.
2/.Low water level..again caused by a leak.
3/.Faulty or leaking water pump.
4/.Loose fan belt.usually squeals too.
5/.Blocked radiator or cooling system.
Any of these can cause the problem.
Check the radiator level when COLD & top up if nescessary.
Place cardboard under the car when is has been run to see if there is a leak when it cools down.

When it is ticking over --- open drivers door, douse interior with petrol, stand well back and throw molotov cocktail in..warm yourself on the burning shell!

Then buy a better vehicle.

You r saying u have no heating on tickover & the temp is on red. Then when u r driving everything is OK??
So on tickover no matter what u do the heater will not work & temp stays on red?
Then u put it in gear, drive away & everything is OK?
l would say while driving the airflow through the rad cools the temp down enough to keep ur red light off.
You obviously wont have this flow while standing still, but the fan should cut in & provide this air flow.
Most likely cause is the temp switch, if u have a hand book it will explain all! Just to be on the safe side remove ur positive lead from the battery before u start, trace the cables from ur fan to the detector,( usually stuck in the rad ' ) disconnect the 2 wires at the detector & just twist the ends together, wrap a bit of insulation tape round them after the twisting, reconnect ur battery, turn on the ignition & the fan should run immediatly, this will prove that u need a new temp detector, not very expensive & easy enough to change, but dont just buy one from from ur Fiat dealer, shop around, u will save at least 50%.
And get a handbook for a few quid it will save u a fortune, it will also tell u what to do next if its not ur sender at fault, but my bet is the sender(detector)!!Good luck.

various reasons-radiator partialy blocked, electric fan not comming on,thermostat faulty, water leak somewhere,.if the temperature is ok when driving and there is no water loss the problem is most likely the fan

your fan for your radiator is not working locate sender switch on radiator ,usually a two wire connector, bridge the connector with ignition on. fan should now work constant. or your thermostat is not opening replace both just in case.
