Are you talking Spiders or X 1/9s . l have owned a number of both. The x 1/9s l think are fairly reliable and easy to do small repairs on yourself. The spiders get to be more of a hassel, but all and all l have been very lucky with mine, as long as you are not driving all the time. Repair costs are not the problem, as much as finding the parts, or the right person to do the work.

Great, fun cars.though

Firstly if you do buy one make sure it has plenty of service history pay particular attention to the cam belt as this is frighteningly expensive to replace, but a good place to start is:

It wo not exactly be a cheap car to run, but it should not cost any more than a small BMW. Look for the usual things, service history, signs of abuse etc, & find a good specialist garage through Yellow pages or Google. Be particularly wary with the Turbo model, since it probably will have been thrashed. Incidentally, a Fiat dealer will tell u the engine has to come out to change the cambelt on a Turbo, & charge £1000+ for the job. Not true, an independant specialist should charge about half that for the job.
Also bear in mind if u fnd a good one & keep it that way, u will suffer virtually no depreciation, as these cars r developing an almost 'classic' status.

l take it u mean the 1995-2001 model? l think they're very sexy cars, way better than german & japanese rivals. Reliability tends to be related to how well they have been treated, make sure that they have a full service history. Mechanically they should be fairly strong, however as with all performance cars many will have been driven hard so watch out for going turbos if the car feels sluggish & slow to pick up speed this is probably the reason ,replacements including fitting can cost up to £800. The later 20v models r easier to maintain & generally more reliable. The main problems with the coupe r electrical faults such as juddery electric windows, lights coming on for no reason, etc. Though relatively small problems they're annoying. These cars r quite expensive to run, fuel economy is just 30 mpg while an insurance quote for a 30 year man is about £450. Servicing at a main dealer is fairly expensive- about £230 for afull service, however servicing at an independant specialist is a lot cheaper, about £170 for a full service. Parts prices r not particularly high, its just the coupe is a hard car to fix.Fiat coupes can be had for as little as £1750, but this is for an early 1995 16v model. If u can stretch to it the best buy would be a 2000 20v turbo, which would cost about £4750 privately or £6000 from a dealer. Depreciation should be low as the coupe is a desirable car. l reckon it would be a cracking buy if u get well cared for example, giving ferrari type performance at a low price.
