Fiat Punto P Reg- Temperature gauge turns shows RED after driving a short distance ie 20 mins drive. Any idea

FIAT PUNTO P REG

A red light on what l think is the temperature gauge suddenly turns RED after driving a short distance. It stays RED and if l continue driving there is a strange noise coming from what sounds like the engine. The car starts smelling of burning and when i'm forced to stop there is smoke coming from the engine.

Please help??

head gasket my friend mine went on my N reg and that is the same description l gave. the head gasket costs about £20 but the labour and scimming costs £180+
check l think the anti freeze summer coolant chamber for a fluid sitting on top of the coolant
