Be careful as reversing the polarity can cause expensive damage. A quick test is to connect a cheap multimeter set to 12 volts dc. If the red probe is on the neg terminal it wo not read. The red probe to battery positive terminal and black to negative terminal will read 12 volts. (mark it up for next time!).

The earth cable should be black & connect to the car is chassis or engine. The positive cable will have a spur leading directly to the starter motor. The battery will always have a '+' & a '-' by the terminals.

YOUR MINUS LEAD IS ALWAYS BOLTED TO BODY WORK if your battery lugs are round they will be slightly different sizes just try one at a time also usualy the leads will only reach the terminals if the batt is the right way round
